Why you should have a strong passion for service In 2018
As the year starts, very many people will be thinking about self-development and growth in 2018. Many people will have adopted New Year resolutions that are geared towards having a successful year. Unfortunately most people will not think of Community Service and Community Engagement as a tool that they can use to not only invest in others but also invest in themselves.
At Lapid Leaders Africa, we believe that Community Service is a great tool for personal development. As part of the Experience, we require Lapid Leaders to engage in a certain minimum number of hours of Service. Driven by our purpose, mission and values, we are making an impact in our communities in the ways that we can. We derive a lot of joy from supporting various initiatives and communities through this Community Service Program. We are also strong believer of the saying that great leaders serve.
At Hope Babies and Happy Life Children’s Home, some of our Community Service Partners, love and care are at the core of our service experience and we use these to bring smiles and joy to the children in the homes. At Kusoma Tu Trust Foundation we are helping the Foundation to entrench education as a human right as many kids in the rehabilitation centres that they serve do not have access to proper literacy programs. In December we organized a week of Community Engagement in Eldoret and got to provide mentorship to various young leaders who have just completed high school.
While each of these and other initiatives that we are involved in are driven by a desire to support and build communities, we have found that as we engage in the Community Service wholeheartedly, we grow tremendously – many Lapid Leaders have become better communicators, are more resilient and are capable of building own initiatives.
“Volunteering is important for youth because it helps them understand two things: how much you gain and grow by helping others, and how much you can have an impact. Whether you’re 5 or 17, you can make a difference.” – Kinsington Hammack-McClure
