From Engineer to Extraordinary Entrepreneur: Mentors Got Me Here
Why did I join Lapid?
I joined Lapid when my career was in that withering stage, a time when I would wake up so early, yet report to work so late. In between were moments of intense, and extensive contemplation, thinking of everything, and nothing. I was trying find just one solid reason to wake up and go make a difference, was like looking for a needle among stacks of hay.
I needed find a reason to wake up, that one thing that at least I would be committed to. I had heard of Lapid but kept postponing for God knows ideal moment. Circumstances, if not God, can be humorous. At the most un-ideal and unlikely moments, I joined lapid. Simply, not to learn from the business leaders, personality gurus, corporate experts and great a teachers that mentor and guide the lapid’ers, I was to sit at the back seat, and learn from my fellow cohort mates.
Lapid draws exceptional individuals, with innovative minds and admirable personalities. Resilient souls, and adventurous minds. This resource, I was ready to mine. I could miss a class, but not squad activities. This was my class. Listening to people’s uphill journey, their different and unique stories of courage, and their aspirations full of hope. In the squads, every personality was unmasked, their different strengths put to test and their unknown and untapped potentials revealed.
From the back seat, it was easy to map exceptional traits, assimilate them and progressively aimed at dispense similar aura.
The art of storytelling, and the journey of purpose were my greatest take outs in that entire experience. The lessons on marketplace, Pan-Africanism and leadership still are heard whispering in my mind, but the above two, remain a great a pillars that tower all other teachings.
Life is a journey and every day we are privileged to write our own stories. With our own uniqueness and innovations. I am committed to writing my story, and I write it with pride, grace and purpose. And every day, I look back at the story written, I may not read it, or narrate it to a hungry soul out there, waiting to be inspired. I read it to myself. I narrate it to myself. These are my greatest moments. Knowing what has been achieved, gives me hope for more, and greater mandates tomorrow.
It’s the writing of this sweet a story daily, that still shapes the journey of purpose. Knowing leaders are defined not by titles. Is it not the efficiency of the janitor that helped put a man on the moon?
About Jay-Executive Dry Cleaning and Laundry Services
After completing the Experience, I not only became more purposeful at work, but also started a business – Jay Executive Dry Cleaning. We are a marketleader in not only Dry Cleaning services and Laundry services, but also commercial and domestic cleaners.
For the dry cleaning and laundry, we do both domestic (such as garment laundry, leather jackets cleaning, removal of stains, duvets and curtains cleaning etc.) and commercial (such as beddings and linens for both restaurants and Guest Rooms, institutional uniforms among others).
Business is fluid, filled with many uncertainties and opportunities in equal measure. It’s the business models taught back at Lapid that helps in most of the situations I face. Being an engineer by profession with no solid background in business, I owe most of the management skills, accounting and use of progressive reporting evaluation matrixes of the business, to Lapid.
Leadership in any business, is key. Every Lapid’er is assigned various roles within their squads. Some of these roles are tough, challenging and draining. Especially project management posts. This, was what I needed. Not only to gather courage to jump into the deep waters, but also had the strength not only to start, to progressively work and evaluate, but also to finish tasks started.
Would I recommend any one to join Lapid?
Lapid is not a classroom, it’s an experience, and a journey. I definitely recommend not anyone who is interested in mining into their potential to in the quench to bring out their best of their versions. People who want to find their purpose, unmask their hidden personalities and who endeavour to learn and re-learn progressively. Only they that are committed to this, do I highly recommend.
At Lapid, our stories are different, but our destiny of re-telling the African story, walking in purpose, and continual re-inventing ourselves….is shared
